European Remote Sensing Satellite - 2 Successfully Launched
Recently the second European Remote Sensing Satellite, ERS-2, was successfully launched from French Guyana spaceport by an Ariane 4 rocket. Canada is an important participant in the ERS-2 program as with its predecessor, ERS-1. ERS-2 carries a suite of instruments including a synthetic aperture radar for monitoring the Earth's surface and atmosphere.
As for Canadian participation, MacDonald Detwiller and Associates (Richmond, BC) is the prime contractor for the ground segment; Spar Aerospace Ltd. (Ste.Anne de Bellevue, P.Q.) was responsible for the transmission subsystem (X-Band downlink); Com Dev Ltd. (Cambridge, ON) also built microwave equipment for ERS-2. The Gatineau (P.Q.) and Prince-Albert (Sask.) ground stations, operated by the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, receive data from ERS-1 and ERS-2. RADARSAT International (Vancouver, BC) distributes the data in North America.
