Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield has been assigned to Space Shuttle mission STS-74. The mission, slated for launch in October of 1995, will be NASA's second Shuttle rendez-vous with the Russian Mir Space Station.

Chris Hadfield was one of four astronauts added to the Canadian astronaut program in June of 1992. In July of 1992 he and Marc Garneau were selected for mission specialist training at NASA's Johnson Space Center. He will be the first Canadian astronaut to fly as mission specialist.

A key feature of the mission is the testing of the Advnaced Space Vision System. The facility aids operators of the remote manipulator system (Canadarm) in tasks which involve close proximity operations, such as grappling spacecraft or Shuttle docking operations. The Space Vision System was first flown on STS-52 with Canadian payload specialist Steve MacLean.
